Aluminium vs Stone-Coated Roofing in Lagos: Which Should You Choose?

If you are building or re-roofing in Lagos, the choice usually comes down to two materials: long-span aluminium and stone-coated roofing. Both are good. The right one depends on your building, your style and your budget.

Long-span aluminium roofing

Aluminium sheets come in long lengths that run from the ridge to the edge of the roof, so there are fewer joints for water to get through. They are light, quick to install and available in many colours.

• Does not rust: a big plus in humid, coastal places like Lekki, Ajah and Victoria Island.
• Lightweight: less load on the roof structure.
• Flexible: works for pitched roofs, hidden roofs and commercial buildings.

The main downside is noise: heavy rain can be louder on aluminium, although good insulation and ceilings reduce this a lot.

Stone-coated roofing

Stone-coated tiles are steel sheets coated with fine stone chips. They look like classic roof tiles and give a premium finish to duplexes and mansions.

• Premium look: rich colours and a textured, tiled finish.
• Quieter in rain: the stone layer softens the sound.
• Strong and long-lasting when installed correctly.

It generally costs more than aluminium, and it needs careful installation so the tiles overlap and are fixed properly.
