When you ask for an aluminium roofing quote in Nigeria, you will hear numbers like 0.45, 0.55 and 0.7. These are the sheet’s gauge, or thickness in millimetres. Picking the right gauge is one of the easiest ways to get a roof that lasts.
What does gauge mean?
Gauge is simply how thick the aluminium sheet is. A higher number in millimetres means a thicker sheet. Thicker sheets are stiffer, resist dents better and generally last longer, but they also cost more.
The common gauges in Nigeria
0.40mm – 0.45mm
The lighter, more budget-friendly options. They can work for small buildings, sheds and tight budgets, but they dent more easily when people walk on them and may not last as long.
0.50mm – 0.55mm
The sweet spot for most homes. These sheets balance strength and price well, and they are a popular choice for duplexes, bungalows and hidden roofs in Lagos.
0.70mm
A heavy-duty, premium gauge. It is a strong choice for commercial buildings, large spans and owners who want the most durable roof their budget allows.
Tip: always ask your supplier to confirm the gauge in writing. Some sheets are sold as one gauge but measure thinner.
How to choose the right gauge
- Homes and hidden roofs: 0.55mm is a safe, long-lasting choice for most projects.
- Tight budget or small structures: 0.45mm can do the job if installed well.
- Commercial and large spans: consider 0.7mm.
- Coastal areas (Lekki, Ajah, VI): aluminium does not rust, but a thicker gauge still gives extra strength against strong wind.
Other things that matter as much as gauge
A thick sheet installed badly will still leak. Pay attention to the sheet profile (step tile, longspan or metro), the coating and colour, the quality of the roof woodwork, and the flashing and fixing.
