PVC Water Collectors: Why Your Lagos Roof Needs Proper Gutters

A roof does two jobs: keep rain out, and send rain away. The second job is done by your water collectors (gutters) and downpipes. In a city with heavy rain like Lagos, they are just as important as the roofing sheets.

What is a PVC water collector?

A water collector is a channel fixed along the edge of the roof that catches rainwater and carries it to downpipes. PVC collectors are popular in Nigeria because they are light, do not rust and come in colours that match your roof.

Why your roof needs them

  • Protects your walls: without gutters, water pours down the walls, causing stains, peeling paint and damp.
  • Protects your foundation: water dropping straight to the ground can wash away soil around the building.
  • Keeps your compound tidy: no muddy splash zones around the house.
  • Essential for hidden roofs: on a hidden roof, water has nowhere else to go. Well-sized collectors stop it from ponding behind the parapet.
  • Rainwater harvesting: downpipes can feed a tank for washing and gardening.

Signs of a bad gutter setup

  • Water spilling over the edge during heavy rain.
  • Gutters sagging or pulling away from the fascia.
  • Standing water in the gutter after the rain stops.
  • Damp patches on walls just below the roof line.

What good installation looks like

  1. Correct size for the roof area and Lagos rainfall.
  2. A gentle fall towards the downpipes so water never sits still.
  3. Enough downpipes, spaced so no section is overloaded.
  4. Strong brackets at close spacing.
  5. Sealed joints and end caps.

Clean your gutters at least twice a year, and always before the rainy season. See our rainy season roof checklist.
